In anticipation of Transience, his upcoming exhibition at Long and Ryle Gallery, painter Nick Archer talks with Bob Chaundy on the Considering Art Podcast about:

how his artistic vision changed while at the Royal Academy Schools in London, how he turned to landscapes after leaving London for the countryside, how his works explore the relationship between figures and the landscape, the influence of film directors on his paintings, how his process involves a certain lack of control, how colour initiates his themes and how recent works involve fragility.

Follow the linkin.bio to listen to the episode!

Nick Archer’s exhibition Transience shows at Long and Ryle, 4 John Islip Street, London from 15 November 2023 to 12 January 2024.

They do not denote a particular place or time but through a balance of beauty and disquiet, they explore the relationship between figures and their environment and as metaphors for man’s association with nature. His process of pouring and layering involves a certain lack of control and in his forthcoming exhibition Transience @longandryle, he explores themes of fragility. 1999 - I came across this old photo of my degree s 1999 - I came across this old photo of my degree show @royalacademyschools in 99 I loved my time there. At the time the schools were going through changes caused by the Sensation exhibition in the main galleries. This was a catalyst for change in my own work at the time, moving from working from observation (my BP portrait painting in my hand) to working from photographic reference (the paintings on the wall). It’s a tug of war that still plays out today #royalacademy #bpportraitaward #degreeshow #beforeihadgreyhair @nationalportraitgallery @royalacademyarts
