Delighted that this large mono print 183 x 100 cm dated 1995 (yes nearly 30 years ago!) has been selected for this years @woolwichcontemporaryprintfair . The mono print was one of a series I produced at the time based on the human figure printed off large sheets of Perspex fitted to my studio floor. Within Archer’s canvases, layers of paint coalesce into dense, enigmatic vistas, each a labyrinthine journey through colour and detail. This is the realm where the ‘dark side of Walt Disney meets northern landscape,’ a beguiling juxtaposition that beckons us with childish wonder and evokes the spectres of bygone memories. These otherworldly landscapes, seemingly lost or imperilled, materialize as phantoms in the annals of our collective imagination.

At times, figures—children, in particular—emerge as protagonists, their eyes our own as we venture through these strange and disquieting landscapes.

Thanks to @britishartfair for this post - Posted @withregram • @britishartfair In 1996 Nick Archer, aged 33, a Yorkshire-bred Leeds Poly Art School graduate, was accepted onto the RA Schools programme. Following an expansive time on the course, his practice developed through figuration to more conceptual and abstract methods of working. ⁠

A later move to East Sussex enhanced a love of landscape, and his splurgy backgrounds increasingly took on the shapes of trees and mountains. ⁠

Nick Archer, b.1963, lives and works in East Sussex, UK. He trained at the Royal Academy Schools in London (1996-1999), he won several awards, including 1st at the ‘Hunting Art Prize’, commendation at the ‘BP Portrait Award’ and the Figure Painting Award at the ‘Discerning Eye’. Nick has exhibited extensively in the UK and Europe since 1999.
